Expert Witness Unable To Do Simple Math

The video is from 2004, but it’s new to me. During a deposition, an “Accident Reconstruction Expert” not only refuses to use a calculator to multiply a number by 20, but admits that he is unable to do so without the aid of his “Formula Sheet.”

The examining attorney really gets the gold when he expertly asks, “We are going to have to tell the court whether you are cooperating with us or not, so are you saying that you are refusing to do the calculation or that you cannot do the calculation?” Not wanting to appear uncooperative, the expert witness states, ” I cannot do it. Not without my reference sheets.”

Expert witnesses hold a lot of sway in the courtroom, particularly in patent cases. I’ll leave it for you to decide whether this particular “expert” is worthy of the title.
