Using Trademark Applications To Get Free Advertising – “It’s on like Donkey Kong”

Sounds like Nintendo has a new old catchphrase in mind.

Nintendo announced Wednesday that it filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for ownership of the pop culture phrase "it’s on like Donkey Kong."

If approved, the patent would kick in on Nov. 21, just in time for the release of Donkey Kong Country for the Wii.

First, I’d like to point out that the news article gets it exactly wrong, this is a trademark application, not a patent application.

The interesting thing is that Nintendo didn’t even coin the decades-old phrase. See, e.g., Ice Cube.  Or Steve Stiffler, if you’d prefer.

Time will tell if the trademark will issue.  If nothing else, it’s been great publicity for Nintendo’s upcoming game release, no?
